2008 Hoops for Hope Charity Ball Game
On behalf of everyone here at the League we want to thank our supporters for making the 10th Annual Hoops for Hope charity basketball game a huge success! This year was a special one for us as we expanded the event into three fun filled day focused on the kids.

On Saturday and Sunday, September 13-14 we hosted our first-ever kids' tournament, which brought together ten youth basketball teams who competed for the Hoops for Hope Youth Challenge Cup. I am proud to say that our inaugural winner was the team from the Washington Jesuit Academy.

On Monday, September 15 we hosted a Day on The Hill for the kids, which focused on teaching them about the value and importance of the First Amendment and what it means to them. The kids heard from lobbyists, Hill staffers and members of the community. They heard real, personal stories about the difference they can make if they are involved in the process. They heard what they can do if they stay in school. After several speakers, the kids were divided up into small groups along with a mentor to discuss an issue of the day. The kids drafted position papers which they then used to lobby members of Congress.

The kids left the Hill for George Washington University, where they were treated to a coaching clinic put on by some of the area's top coaches. The kids' day was followed by the main event of the day - the congressional versus lobbyists basketball games. We want to congratulate the two winning teams as the congressional staff defeated ALL by a score of 42-40 and ALL defeated the MC team for the second consecutive year by a score of 47-32.

They were two great games with the real winners being the kids. This event has grown and succeeded for two reasons. First, we have such an outstanding group of sponsors who year in and year out support the program and the kids it helps. We realize that without each of you, we would not have made the impact we have the past ten years. This year we added two big pieces to our efforts and you all responded by helping us raise more money than ever before. The final numbers aren’t in yet, but we estimate that we were able to raise nearly $90,000, putting our ten year total at roughly $400,000 raised for the kids.

The second reason for our success is because of the volunteers and players who commit a considerable amount of time each year to making this event run so smoothly. For ten years we have seen an increase in volunteers and players, and this is a credit to ALL and its team for the vision and the belief that we can do more. The commitment shown by ALL and its members is a testament to the entire profession and the work we do. Too often we are the target of unfair attacks. On September 15, together as a profession, we proved that together we can come together for the betterment of our community.

There are so many people we need to thank, and we would be remiss if we didn’t name some of those who put in a lot of hard work to pull this event together. A Special thanks go to:

Kate Leonard of the Leonard Group, LLP for pulling together a very successful Day on the Hill for the kids; Adam Schwartz of the National Cooperative Business Association, Jen Pugh of HDR, and Howard Fienberg of CMOR, for mentoring the kids on the Hill. A special thanks to Monte Ward of Advanced Capital Consulting for assembling another top-notch silent auction, which set another record for money raised, and too Danny Leonard of the Leonard Group, LLP for working so hard to organize the kids basketball tournament. This event was a huge success and we owe Danny for making it happen. And, to Patti Jo Baber for her efforts throughout the year to keep the event organized. We couldn’t do it without you.
